Philip Pelusi's new hair care line takes organic approach

In the category of hometown boy makes good, we can place Philip Pelusi, whose Tela Beauty Organics line of hair care products just debuted at Nordstrom. It's also available at Barney's and Neiman Marcus, pretty much cornering the market on luxury retailers.

Tela is Latin and translates as "fabric." The selling point is that 17 of the 27 hair and skin products are certified organic by the USDA, which uses food standards.

"That's really the toughest test," says Mr. Pelusi, who began his career in Pittsburgh 44 years ago and has 13 salons in the region. "Many products have some organic extracts and use the word loosely."

Working with a chemist and an herbalist, Mr. Pelusi developed the line after years of producing salon and professional products. Tela products are manufactured locally at Sensibility, a certified organic plant in Beaver. Prices range from $14 to $38, with some emerging as clear favorites. Among them are the body butter and a dry shampoo that sprays on (unlike those icky powders!). The shampoo removes 85 percent of surface and scalp dirt, refreshes the hair and gives it shine.
Mr. Pelusi is especially proud of Healer, which is a styling cream that also repairs damaged hair, and Guardian, a sunscreen for the hair and scalp with an SPF of 18.

"Most melanomas start in the scalp. We designed this so you can reapply it every few hours and your hair won't get greasy. It's a lightweight cream that disappears, very lubricating, and it protects colored hair from fading. We have women who buy it for their husbands who have thinning hair."
Launching a new line in the middle of a recession proved to be a challenge, with department store buyers under orders "to cease and desist and clean house," Mr. Pelusi says.
He credits having his Tela Design Studio in the meat packing district of New York as a big help. Buyers were able to stop in and test the products, at which point the years Mr. Pelusi spent on micro-emulsion technology (a method to get products into the hair shaft) and other innovations paid off. "The hardest thing is getting the ingredients to work!" he says.

Obviously, the people whose business it is to know believe he has succeeded.

Nordstrom will host free Tela clinics at its Ross Park Mall store on Dec. 13 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
